The Pentecostal tradition began with several Holiness revival events in 19th Century America. A desire for the intense and direct experience of the Spirit of God found expression in "gifts" such as prophecy, healing and speaking in unknown tongues. An emphasis on Biblical literalism, conversion and moral living is common among the variety of groups calling themselves Pentecostal. The most well known early event is the Azusa Street revival of 1906 in Los Angeles. Today there are Christian Pentecostal churches in many countries of the world.
